Sorry and a comment on Dan's blog posting on leadership.

I apologize to all you bloggers for not posting since I originally signed on. I really appreciate the fact that CP has taken the time and effort to begin this network. Now that I am back posting, I hope others join in and things won't be so QUIET.
What do we want to talk about? Dan's recent posting on his site was about leadership. My retired cop cynical side says , What leadership, SOS Police? The fact is what Dan says is true. The only thing different I have to add is that there ARE some awesome examples of leadership within the SOSPD's history, so why use the movies for examples. Now I am not being cynical. Alot of these examples exist in middle management and/or with rank and file. After 25 years in the department, I often heard external criticism of our agency from politicians, media, other PDs and the community . I as both a LT and CAPT often heard internal criticism of hardworking rank and file from the DOP upper echelon, our so called leaders. The fact as I reflect back is that SOS DOP is full of examples of investigators that did the RIGHT THING and had the RIGHT STUFF despite the pressure of our politically appointed bosses. I was always proud of the men and women of the SOS DOP dsepite the political bureaucracy for which we were employed and struggled against. So Dan, look internally for real life examples.
Love y'all,
retired Capt. Ed H.

I am quite sure you are correct Ed. I just used the example of the "movies" because it came to mind, and I was trying to define "referent" power in a leader for the purposes of illustration.
